RGSSA signs DORA Declaration

The RGSSA is pleased to have been able to sign the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) on 6 July 2021, becoming the first geographical organisation in Australia and New Zealand to do so. The Society joins organisations such as the Australian Academy of Science, the International Geographical Union, and the University of Melbourne to sign this Declaration which recognises the need to improve the ways in which researchers and the outputs of scholarly research are evaluated.

Although there are more details in the DORA website https://sfdora.org/, the Declaration’s general principle is: “Do not use journal-based metrics, such as Journal Impact Factors, as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research articles, to assess an individual scientist’s contributions, or in hiring, promotion, or funding decisions.”

We hope you and any research organisation with which you may be affiliated will consider becoming a signatory to the DORA Declaration.
