New Foundation Director

Society appoints Emeritus Professor Iain Hay as foundation Director.

Emeritus Distinguished Professor Iain Hay

The President, Leigh Radford OAM, announced this exciting news to members;

"This is a significant step for our Society, which has been entirely volunteer-run since it was founded in 1885. Effective from 22 August, Iain Hay will lead the Society in a new era of impact and expansion. Iain is a highly regarded geographer who brings a strategic mindset and a long record of service to the Society, as well as to many other state, national and international organisations. He is very excited to continue the rich legacy of the Society and to drive its future growth.

Professor Hay was selected for the role following a nationwide search for a suitable candidate. Iain is Matthew Flinders Emeritus Distinguished Professor at Flinders University. He has also served as President of the Institute of Australian Geographers and First Vice-President of the International Geographical Union. He holds two doctorates, the first of which he completed as Fulbright Scholar at the University of Washington, as well as prestigious management credentials. He has more than a dozen successful books to his credit and is a former Australian University Teacher of the Year.

Iain Hay takes on this role as the Society embarks on a new program to share its vast treasures more publicly, attract new members, and build professional connections. This is a pivotal moment in the history the RGSSA and it is a game changer. I could not be more enthused by what an important step we are taking in appointing a Director."
