Beyond the car. Creating a sustainable and liveable Adelaide

This symposium brings together a range of transport planning experts to discuss mechanisms by which to promote and enable a range of active travel modes that can facilitate the development of both a more sustainable and liveable Adelaide and a healthier and engaged population.

The Greater Adelaide Region covers an area in excess of 11,000 square kilometres dominated by a spatially dispersed form of urban development in which private motor vehicle travel is prioritised. Transport infrastructure investment is firmly focused on road building and road widening projects with little interest shown in genuinely enhancing the travel choices available to Adelaide’s growing communities. This is particularly acute for residents living on the outskirts of the city. To meet the challenges of housing affordability, population health, social equity, environmental sustainability and economic development, Greater Adelaide needs an integrated transport and land use plan that goes beyond a reliance on car-based travel. And in order for Adelaide’s residents to access housing, employment and educational opportunities, as well as social and cultural activities, they need to have a range of convenient transport options available to them; in short, greater travel choice. 

This symposium brings together a range of transport planning experts to discuss mechanisms by which to promote and enable a range of active travel modes that can facilitate the development of both a more sustainable and liveable Adelaide and a healthier and engaged population. In doing so, we seek to encourage a conversation about what a sustainable transport network looks like and how it can enable journeys that are timely, safe, reliable and affordable for all.
