The Royal Geographical Society of South Australia (Inc.) is a voluntary, not-for profit organisation for advancing geographical science and promoting public awareness and enjoyment of Geography and related topics.
Experience. Geography. Together.TM
The Society is governed by an elected Council. The Society’s business is managed by a series of Committees responsible to the Council (Publications, Library, Geographical Heritage (not currently active – formed as required), Research and Awards, Program and Administration). The Society is fortunate to have as joint Patrons; Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia, and Mr Rod Bunten.
To find out more about where the Society is heading and how it hopes to get there, view the Strategic Plan endorsed by Council in June 2021.
Our Director, Emeritus Professor Iain Hay, has prepared an inspirational and informative presentation about the ongoing importance of Geography.
Membership of the Society is by subscription and is open to anyone. While the Society takes a special interest in the geography of South Australia and its immediate region, it also extends to the global scale.
You can read about the breadth of our activities in our Prospectus or view our brief our Manifesto showing who we are and what we do on our YouTube channel.
"Geography is the study of place, space and the environment. Geographers investigate the character of places, the distribution of phenomena across space, biophysical processes and features, and dynamic relationships between humans and environments."
This definition of Geography was endorsed in November 2010 by the: Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee for Geography, Australian Geography Teachers’ Association, Geographical Society of New South Wales, Institute of Australian Geographers, Royal Geographical Society of Queensland, and Royal Geographical Society of South Australia.
