Cruises - The Good, The Bad and The ...!

Royal Geographical Society of SA - Saturday 22 February

Many RGSSA members have been on cruises, or would like to go on one.  This discussion session is designed to bring out the good points of cruises, as well as the negatives. 

The sorts of issues to be discussed include the following: 

  • Cost 
  • Value for money?
  • Scale of the ship – enormous vs intimate. 
  • Are gratuities an issue? These can add a thousand $ or more to the cost. 
  • Exercise opportunities. 
  • Entertainments. 
  • Spread of illnesses on board. 
  • Comparison of cruise companies and ships. 
  • Quality and variety of entertainment on board. 
  • Shore tours. 
  • Sales on board – art, jewellery. 
  • Destinations being loved to death. 
  • Distorted impression of places. 
  • Engagement with locals. 
  • Opportunity to learn new skills through training sessions. 
  • Lecturers’ quality, relevance, level of communication, informative about destinations. 
  • Suggestions.
