What’s in the RGSSA Collection about the Men and Women of the North Terrace Plaques?

In 1986, South Australia’s sesquicentenary year, the Jubilee 150 Board decided to honour a selection of men and women who have made significant contribution to the Sate’s progress. Bronze plaques were laid in the footpath of North Terrace, featuring the names, dates and occupation of 169 eminent South Australians. In 2001, the Historical Society of South Australia published a book8 of concise bibliographies of these people, ranging from explorers, inventors, industrialists, social reformers, parliamentarians, scientists, writers, artists and sporting figures – the men and women who have enriched out culture and improved our way of life.

Given this diverse range, how many of the 169 men and women are represented in the RGSSA’s collection, either as an author, a significant subject or other contribution? The answer will be revealed during this session, when each participant will be asked to review an item taken from the RGSSA Library Catalogue and outline its contents to the wider audience. At the end of the session, everyone will have time to peruse the items just summarised and ask questions, leading to a much better understanding next time you walk along North Terrace!

A participant-driven session not to be missed!
