Treasures and Rabbit Holes: Exploring the RGSSA's Photograph Collection

The Society has more than 30 large pictorial albums - this talk highlights a selection of these remarkable photographic albums, showcasing expeditions undertaken during the 19th century. 

In the Society’s collection there are more than 30 large pictorial albums featuring people, places and fascinating moments from the past. The aim of the project is to compare the photographic database with the images contained in these albums, ensuring records are accurate and enriching descriptions to create better finding aids for the RGSSA Library catalogue. In short, it's a little bit of detective work and a little bit of treasure hunting! 

This talk highlights a selection of these remarkable photographic albums, showcasing expeditions undertaken during the 19th century. The journey takes us through outback Australia, historic Adelaide, Asia, the South Pacific and Europe, offering intriguing glimpses into people, places, and adventures from a bygone era.
