Geography Victoria (GV) is Australia’s newest voluntary, community-based geographical society. Victoria has not had a Geographical Society since 1920. And Australia has not had a new state-based geographical society since the Geographical Society of NSW was established in 1927. So the launch of Geography Victoria was genuinely a once in a century event!

On Sunday 10 November Geography Victoria (GV) was launched at the Melbourne Town Hall.
The event was held at the Melbourne Town Hall. Acting GV Chair Ian Rutherfurd welcomed the large gathering and Australian Academy of Science CEO Anna-Maria Arabia offered introductory remarks. Geographer and media personality Rob Gell AM moderated a lively panel discussion involving Libby Porter, James Currie, Chris Ramos and RGSSA Director Iain Hay before Tim Costello AO launched Geog Vic officially with an excellent and insightful speech. The afternoon’s formalities concluded with some lovely comments from Libby Hillman.
Professor Hay noted expressed support from the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia to our newest community-based partner.
