The John Lewis Prize for Excellence in Doctoral Research in Geography

The John Lewis Medal for Excellence in Doctoral Research in Geography is awarded to a student, from one or more of The University of Adelaide, Flinders University, and the University of South Australia, who has made a significant theoretical or empirical contribution to geography through the completion of a PhD (or equivalent).

For what and to whom is this award given?

The John Lewis Medal for Excellence in Doctoral Research in Geography is awarded to a student, from one or more of The University of Adelaide, Flinders University, and the University of South Australia, who has made a significant theoretical or empirical contribution to geography through the completion of a PhD (or equivalent). The John Lewis Medal for Excellence in Doctoral Research in Geography was established in memory of the late the Hon. John Lewis M.L.C. J.P. (1842 – 1923) who was a former President of the Society.

How are awardees acknowledged?

Awardees receive a medal and a certificate and three years of membership of the Society. They are recognized at a special event of the Society, such as the Annual Awards Ceremony typically held in Government House – and hosted by the Governor – or the Society’s Annual Dinner. They are also acknowledged in GeoNews, the member’s newsletter, as well as on the Society’s website and through other relevant media.

How are awardees selected?

On behalf of Council, the RGSSA administration shall correspond annually with each of the named universities seeking their university’s single nomination for the award of The John Lewis Medal for Excellence in Doctoral Research in Geography. Nominations, including copies of each of the thesis examiners’ reports must be submitted to the Chair of the Awards Committee by 31 January. Nominations will be accepted only for the degrees conferred in the previous calendar year. All nominations are evaluated by the Awards Committee (or their delegates) with their recommendation being put to the Council for decision.
